San Jose (officially San Joseph), the town of San José, the financial, cultural and political center of Silicon Valley, and the biggest town in Northern California (both by population and by region). It is the third most populous town in California (after Los Angeles and San Diego) and the tenth most populous town in the United States with an estimated population of 1,035,317 in 2017.
Situated in the center of the Santa Clara Valley, on San Francisco Bay’s southern shore, San Jose covers an area of 179.97 square miles (466.1 km2). San Jose is Santa Clara County county seat, California’s most wealthy county, and one of America’s most prosperous counties. San Jose is the primary element of the Metropolitan Statistical Area of San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara, with an estimated population of approximately 2 million in 2018.
It is also the most populous city in both the Bay Area of San Francisco and the Combined Statistical Area of San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland, containing 7.7 million and 8.7 million people. San Jose is a global city, known for its affluence as a center of innovation, Mediterranean environment and exceptionally elevated living costs. The placement of San Jose in the booming high-tech industry as a cultural, political and economic hub has gained the town the nickname ‘ Silicon Valley Capital.’ According to the Brookings Institution, San Jose is one of the richest major cities in the U.S. and the world and has the third highest per capita GDP in the world (after Zürich, Switzerland and Oslo, Norway).
