The county seat and largest city of Stanislaus County, California, United States, is Modesto (Spanish for ” modest “), officially the City of Modesto. With a population of approximately 201,165 at the 2010 census, it is the state of California’s 18th largest city and forms part of the combined statistical area of Modesto-Merced.
Modesto is located 68 miles (109 km) south of Sacramento and 90 miles (140 km) north of Fresno in the Central Valley. It is 64 km (40 miles) north of Merced, California, 148 km (92 miles) east of San Francisco, 106 km (66 miles west of Yosemite National Park, and 39 km (24 miles) south of Stockton. Modesto has several times been honored as a Tree City USA. It’s surrounded by rich farmland; in farm production, Stanislaus County ranks sixth among California counties. The county grossed nearly $3.1 billion in agricultural production in 2011, led by milk, almonds, chickens, walnuts, and maize silage. As in the Central Valley, the farm-to-table movement plays a central role in living in Modesto.
