Tamayo Family Vineyards

11670 Byron Hwy Brentwood, CA 94513

Tamayo Family Vineyards was created with Jeff and Sara Tamayo’s love of wine and belief in the miraculous soils of the emerging Contra Costa area, just over an hour east of downtown San Francisco.

Winemaker Jon Engelskirger is a California native who graduated from the Department of Enology and Viticulture at California State University and revamped his craft for a number of renowned wineries for the next 30 years, including Silverado Vineyards, Robert Pepi Winery, and Turnbull Wine Cellars. He is pleased to extend his expertise to the area of Contra Costa. “Winegrowing in this part of Contra Costa is in its infancy,” Jon explains. “For an experienced winemaker to apply the skills learned elsewhere to these unique conditions is a wonderful challenge. The puzzle pieces are still mostly lying randomly about the viticultural plain. And the mind is totally engaged.”

The Tamayos have approached Mark Enlow as their general manager. Mark brought a unique blend of industry experience and a New York Culinary Institute degree. He works closely with the Tamayos on the promotional strategy for their wines, bottled under three names: Tamayo, Cana Family Signature, and Cana. Cana Wines come from the original replanted vineyard between 2003 and 2006. The Tamayos chose the name to commemorate the miraculous transformation of water into wine at the first-century wedding feast in Cana. Described as a New World red blend of eight European varieties, Mark sees Cana as the Contra Costa region’s flagship wine.

In Jon’s words: “Of all the wines I’ve made, Cana has been one of my most satisfying projects.”

Visiting the winery needs an appointment, but those who fail to make plans need not be disappointed. At Co County Wine Company, a cooperative tasting room in downtown Brentwood, they can also enjoy sampling wines from Tamayo Family Vineyards.

Tamayo Family Vineyards give incredible service, attention to detail, and of course a world-class wine! They are now opening up Fri-Sat for most weekends rather than just an appointment. The owner including the staff are more than accommodating. They will allow you to bring your dog and they are welcome in the place. One of the owners, Sarah Tamayo, was very kind to visitors and guests. Anyone who has visited the site will definitely come back in the future. We recommend that you go there and experience the service at Tamayo Family Vineyards.
